With 24 years of experience, Jennifer Broadbent is a dedicated Theatre and Dance educator with a passion for creating dynamic, student-centered projects. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA and a teaching credential from California State University, Dominguez Hills, along with the Theatre CSET credential. Her teaching philosophy aligns with the HArts Way, emphasizing active engagement and creativity in the classroom. Every day, she encourages her students to embrace fresh starts, learn from mistakes, and continuously move forward in their growth.
Ms. Broadbent’s favorite subjects to teach are Theatre and Dance, where she fosters artistic expression through choice boards and arts-based projects. She is exceptionally proud of HArts’ Exemplary Arts program and the high-caliber productions her students deliver. Her pride extends to student-created performances like the Battle of the Classes and the Multicultural Show, where students take the lead in content creation and development.
In Stage Crew, Ms. Broadbent incorporates technology into her lessons by using advanced design tools to build set pieces, maximizing the quality of lighting and sound to support the productions. Outside of the classroom, she produces, directs, and choreographs all major productions on campus, including the musical, Best of Broadway, Dance Shows, Battle of the Classes, and the Multicultural Show. She also actively contributes to the school community through her roles on the Instructional Leadership Team and coordination of calendar and shared use.
Ms. Broadbent has received two Golden Apple Awards and was instrumental in earning Distinguished Schools Exemplary Arts Recognition for HArts. Her students have also shined on larger stages, with four nominees for the prestigious Jerry Herman Awards for High School Musical Theatre, including one two-time winner who went on to represent Los Angeles in the Jimmy Awards for national high school musical theatre.
In her personal life, Ms. Broadbent loves tropical vacations and admits that maintaining a work-life balance is a challenge—so much so that her whole family often comes to help with her productions. A fun fact about Ms. Broadbent is her love for math and puzzles, which often surprises her students and colleagues. In the coming years, she aims to attract high-caliber students who are passionate about the arts.
As a member of the HArts Academy design team, Ms. Broadbent continues to shape and enhance the school's artistic vision.
